Sonic is back, and looking better than ever. He’s coming in at our third character to be announced within 18 days, and catches EVERYONE who was expecting a new Pokemon character by surprise. There’s now little reason to doubt that characters ARE being announced in preparation for upcoming titles….But this is cheating! Sonic Lost World isn’t due to come out until AFTER Pokemon, so what gives?
We don’t really have an answer for that other than to prove a point that they’re willing to announce a character WHENEVER they really feel like it. If we find out the reason, we’ll be sure to let you know!
Now let’s get crackin’. What’d they change on the Blue Blur?
At first glace, it would be difficult to say that all that much has changed. But here’s a few things that we’re seeing right off the bat:
Looks like a solid change all around! He looks much more friendly now, which fits with the theme Nintendo is going for.
Unlike our other newly announced veterans, we actually have something pretty exciting to show off: Gameplay footage!
With this rather helpful footage, a few mere seconds reveals that the following is unchanged:
- Aerial Down+A
- Neutral Special
- Side Special
- Aerial Up+A
- Up Special
So those that were hoping he might be altered a little might be a tad disappointed. Sorry folks! Not much has changed thus far. Chances are that he’s received buffs all around to compensate for his previous issues, though!
Sonic brought a gift with him: A brand new stage based on the first level of Sonic Lost World!
There’s a small clip of Sonic dashing about in it in the footage right here. here’s a couple things we noticed about it:
- It is VERY LARGE. At least at first glance. You can tell that there’s quite a few platforms and that sonic has quite a bit of area to cover in the few moments that he makes his rounds, so this could perhaps be a scrolling stage.
- It appears to be on a curve of some sort. Even with just the above image you can tell that it’s got a somewhat circular edge from just the background. Sonic Lost World is already being very heavily compared to Super Mario Galaxy, and a lot of people think that this Pic of the Day hinted HEAVILY on a stage based on the franchise…we’re got a hunch that there may be two levels with a similar feel to them in this game….
Also, they used the Sonic Heroes theme to announce his return. That was a pretty nice touch.
That’s all we’ve got for now. Sonic the Hedgehog was always bound to make a return in our eyes, but it’s GREAT to see it finally confirmed. He had a couple of complaints last time around and we’re sure that the development team has taken them to heart. We’re really looking forward to seeing how he plays in Super Smash Bros 4!
